The Mazda CX-9 is outfitted with a SYACTIV®-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine that generates 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If you want to up your power output, use premium unleaded fuel instead of regular fuel, and you'll boost your horsepower up to 250.

This engine uses dynamic pressure to provide improved low-RPM responsiveness by using variable valve timing to accelerate gasses. It also separates exhaust into three pathways for more evenly metered pulses, which helps reduce turbo lag.

It also uses advanced direct injection to improve efficiency. Like other direct injection engines, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder to optimize engine performance. However, this particular model uses a 6-hole design, instead of only one, to mix the fuel more evenly and create a more complete combustion.

You'll also achieve an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 MPG city and 28 MPG highway with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 20 MPG city and 26 MPG highway with all-wheel drive (AWD).¹

Mazda CX-9 Drivetrain and Traction Technology

When considering the Mazda CX-9, keep in mind that FWD comes standard, but i-ACTIV AWD® is available for all trims. This technology uses sensors to continuously monitor your road conditions and adjust torque distribution for an optimized driving experience.

On treacherous roadways, like during a snowstorm, torque will be evenly distributed between all four wheels to prevent slippage. If one wheel loses traction, torque will be redistributed to the wheels with a firm grip to keep you steady.

On a sunny summer day, as you cruise down an open highway, the system will ease up torque sent to the front wheels, helping you preserve fuel by operating in FWD.

Drivers who love the smooth shifting and optimized performance you get with an automatic transmission will like that the Mazda CX-9 comes with a SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission.

However, drivers who like to take control of their driving experience will enjoy that manual-shift and Sport Mode are also available.
