All types of family-friendly SUVs can be seen around the streets of East Stroudsburg, Stroudsburg, Easton, Brodheadsville, and Saylorsville, PA. If you're considering this type of SUV for your growing family, two of the premier models are the Mazda CX-5 vs. the Subaru Outback.

We'll be highlighting key traits in both the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback. That way, you know what to expect from each SUV. At Ray Price Mazda, we can also arrange a test drive for you!

How Does the Performance Measure Up?

When you drive an SUV, you expect it to have a strong performance, capable of getting up to highway speeds with the firm push of the gas pedal. Luckily, both the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback have potent powertrains. However, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 races past the Outback in terms of overall strength. With the available Skyactiv®-G 2.5T engine, the Mazda CX-5 can churn out up to 320 lb-ft of torque, an important figure for towing. As for the Subaru Outback, its top-tier 2.4L turbocharged engine puts out 277 lb-ft of torque.Mazda also has an edge with its on-road traction, which will prove to be useful during tumultuous weather. The Mazda CX-5 sports Skyactiv®-Vehicle Dynamics with G-Vectoring Control Plus, a system that monitors road conditions and adjusts the driving dynamics accordingly.

Additionally, there's the available i-Activ AWD® system with Off-Road Traction Assist, which intuitively activates all-wheel drive to improve stability and traction during inclement weather. The Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system for the Outback is useful, too. Still, it doesn't compare to the Mazda CX-5 i-Activ AWD® system that monitors road conditions and automatically adjusts torque.

Overall, the Mazda CX-5 has more technology devoted to on-road traction and stability than what you can expect with the Outback.

Standard Safety Features

You shouldn't have to upgrade to higher trim levels to receive comprehensive safety systems in your SUV. While both the Subaru Outback and Mazda CX-5 receive great safety ratings, it's the Mazda CX-5 that gives you more on the standard trim.

On the base trim of the 2021 Mazda CX-5, you'll be able to rely on the following safety systems:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane-keep Assist

While the Subaru Outback does come with the standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology package, it doesn't include as many safety systems as the Mazda CX-5. For instance, if you want to have the Blind-Spot Detection system in the Outback, you'll have to upgrade to a higher trim level.

The Mazda also beats out the Subaru's advanced safety technology on higher trims. For example, on the Mazda CX-5's highest trim, you will get:

  • A 360º View Monitor
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Smart City Brake Support-Reverse

While the Subaru includes comparable technology like Reverse Automatic Braking and a DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System, it does not offer a camera with a 360º view.

Exterior Style and Practicality

The Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback are two good-looking SUVs, but Mazda does a better job of blending practicality with a sophisticated design. For example, the Mazda CX-5 features available 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, while the Outback offers only 17-inch or 18-inch wheels. Mazda also surpasses Subaru when it comes to lighting systems. In fact, it offers:

  • LED Headlights with auto-leveling
  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • LED fog lights
  • LED combination taillights
  • Adaptive Front-lighting System

On the Outback, you can find LED lighting in its headlights and fog lights. However, neither has auto-leveling capability.

In terms of style, the Mazda CX-5 goes the extra mile to stand out. For instance, when you select either the Carbon Edition or Carbon Edition Turbo trims, your SUV will be decked out with a black grille unique to that model as well as a Polymetal Gray Metallic body paint.

While the Subaru offers earthy tones for exterior color options, you have various metallic and jewel-toned colors to choose from with the Mazda.

MAZDA CX-5 vs Subaru Outback Infotainment

There is tons of fun technology to enjoy on both the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback. Both are equipped with high-resolution touchscreen multimedia systems. The Mazda CX-5 utilizes Mazda Connect™, while the Outback uses STARLINK®.

However, the Mazda CX-5 beats out the Subaru's system with its infotainment system voice command featureavailable for all trims.

On the 2021 Mazda, you will also find an available Active Driving Display projected onto the windshield when you select either the Grand Touring Reserve or Signature trims.

With it, you can view information like your speed and navigation instructions without taking your eyes off the road. With the 2021 Outback, you won't have technology like this.

Convenience and Comfort

Inside both models, you will find a variety of features that turn driving into an experience. For instance, both vehicles offer available dual-zone automatic climate control starting at their second trim. However, the Mazda CX-5's climate control includes a pollen filter. This detail can make a big difference for drivers with seasonal allergies.

Additionally, both vehicles have available leather-trim options, including Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery. Drivers of either vehicle can also feel the luxury of a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift.

Another feature you can enjoy on both vehicles is the available front seat heating starting on the second trim of both SUVs.

If you're looking for heated rear seats, you'll find them standard on the Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims. On the Outback, rear outboard heated seats are standard, starting with the Outback Limited trim.

MAZDA CX-5 Outperforms the Subaru Outback

In a head-to-head comparison, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 outperforms the Subaru Outback. Not only does the Mazda deliver stronger performance, but it also comes armed with innovative safety systems and practical yet stylish exterior features.

While a comparison is a helpful introduction to both models, the best way to learn about a vehicle is with a test drive through Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, Brodheadsville, Saylorsville, and Easton, Pennsylvania.
