Mazda CX-5 vs Honda CR-V vs Ford Escape: Drivetrain

Since we tend to see a lot of snow in our area, local commuters understandably prefer an SUV with all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities. The good news is: the Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape all make this an option.

All three SUVs offer a smart AWD system that actively monitors your driving conditions and automatically redistributes torque as necessary to improve your grip on the road. While the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V make their systems available on all trim levels, the Escape requires an upgrade before it's an option.

Engine Specs

To get an idea of acceleration abilities in low-traction conditions, we looked at the standard engines available for each SUV with its AWD system. In the Ford Escape, this is the 1.5L EcoBoost® I-4 engine that's available with a trim level upgrade. It delivers 179 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.

The Honda CR-V offers its AWD system with its standard 2.4L I-4 engine that generates 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The Mazda CX-5, however, came out ahead with its standard 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L I-4 engine that puts out 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The CR-V and Escape would require an engine upgrade to access a comparable engine output.

With the increased torque capabilities, drivers in the Mazda CX-5 may have an easier time getting moving during a fresh winter snow.

Mazda CX-5 vs Honda CR-V vs Ford Escape: Infotainment

If you like to stay connected, informed, and entertained when on-the-go, you'll be happy with the infotainment systems available in all three of these SUVs. Inside the Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape, you'll find standard Bluetooth® connectivity that allows you to link your smartphone to your car, so you can make phone calls and stream music.

The Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape also all come with a touchscreen display, on which you can view song information, caller ID, and available turn-by-turn navigation. However, to access this information, you have to divert your eyes from the road ahead.

The Mazda CX-5 offers a solution with the available Active Driving Display with Traffic Sign Recognition system. This display projects important information directly onto the lower portion of your windshield, so that you're always in-the-know without ever taking your eyes off the road.

Without this feature, drivers in the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V may find themselves looking away from the road more often.
